G98 or G99? Scotland Solar Export Calculator
Determine DNO notification requirements for Scotland
Critical for Installers
Every solar PV system in Scotland must be registered with the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before energising. The notification process depends on total generation capacity at the connection point:
G98 Self-Notification
- • Single-phase: ≤3.68kW
- • Three-phase: ≤11.04kW
- • Typical approval: 28 days
- • No assessment fees
G99 Formal Application
- • Single-phase: >3.68kW
- • Three-phase: >11.04kW
- • SPEN: ~65 days, SSEN: ~45-55 days
- • Possible fees: £0-£500

NOTIFICATION REQUIRED: G99
⚠ G99 Formal Application Required
Your system exceeds the G98 threshold and requires formal G99 DNO approval. This typically takes 65 working days and may incur assessment costs of £0-£500 depending on network constraints.
Scotland DNO Contacts
| DNO | Coverage | G98 Threshold | Contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| SP Energy Networks | Central/SW Scotland | 3.68kW (1φ) 11.04kW (3φ) | |
| Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (North) | Highlands & Islands | 3.68kW (1φ) 11.04kW (3φ) | |
| Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (South) | SE Scotland | 3.68kW (1φ) 11.04kW (3φ) |
What If I'm On The Border?
If your proposed system is close to the G98/G99 threshold (e.g., 3.5-4kW), consider:
- •Designing the system at or below 3.68kW to qualify for G98
- •Installing an export limiter to cap export at 3.68kW while allowing higher self-use
- •Three-phase connection raises threshold to 11.04kW
Export Constraints in Scotland
Some rural areas — particularly SSEN North (Highlands & Islands) — have network constraints that may limit export regardless of G98/G99 approval.
This is critical for SEG income calculations. Scottish Energy Efficiency always checks export constraints before quoting.
